We started this wild ride back on the 13th, and honestly, I’ve lost track of time. Days blur together when you’re ping-ponging between crumbling motels, ghost towns, and uncooked chicken dinners.

Elayne and I kicked things off on a DFDS ferry from Dover to Calais. France welcomed us with its usual je ne sais quoi, which, in our case, meant a grim B&B in Rouen. The ceiling was decorated with mould, a masterpiece of decay, and the bathroom had a gap under the door wide enough for who-knows-what to crawl through. “A cozy start,” I said. Elayne just gave me that look. You know the one.

From there, we made it to Chartres, a city whose cathedral is both stunning and terrifying. The stained glass seemed alive, pulsating with an energy that defied logic. Elayne didn’t feel it, but I swear those walls whispered things, things you’re not supposed to hear. At least the locals were nice. I was on the road, heading towards Sofia to meet a colleague, Fried Didden, who runs the excellent borderlines blog. Fried was landing around 6 PM, and I had a few hours to kill—time I planned to spend getting my brake pads fixed after an ill-fated attempt with a supplier in Kosovo. My trusty Land Rover had done a solid 27,000 kilometers on the last set, and the grinding sound it now made felt like an unwelcomed companion on the highway.

Here I am with my friend Mohammad, who’s been a great help in keeping my Land Rover running smoothly on these long journeys. It’s around 5:28 pm, and the Black Sea, with its shimmering blue and green waters, dances gently with the waves whispering along the shore.

Strolling along the beach, the ambience is one of pure relaxation. Children, engrossed in the timeless joy of building sandcastles, add a playful rhythm to the scene. Some sculpt human figures, while others dig deep to create makeshift lakes, the joy on their faces reflecting the magic of their creations. The gentle breeze carries laughter and the sound of waves, an orchestra of summer bliss. This is a rare pocket of serenity, a stark contrast to the bustling cities many are accustomed to.
